METRO VANCOUVER (formerly the Greater Vancouver Regional District) is one of 28 regional governments created in 1967 to coordinate local services to Lower Mainland municipalities. It now encompasses 22 municipalities, 1 treaty First Nation and 1 electoral district with a total population of 2.3 million and a total area of 282,000 ha.
