Douglas & McIntyre is proud to bring Hilary Stewart’s enduring classic, Indian Fishing, back into print in partnership with the University of Washington Press. Some years ago this classic study fell victim to changing publishing technologies and the original 1977 printers’ films on which it was stored could no longer be used. There followed a 10-year hiatus while it was unavailable, but its many fans refused to let it fade away. Demands for permission to copy Ms. Stewart’s remarkable drawings poured in from museums, scholars, authors and fellow publishers, attesting to the undiminished need for such a work. Thanks to improvements in scanning processes we have finally been able to make a copy of the original that satisfies contemporary digital printing requirements, and we present it in unchanged form from the 1977 edition. Hilary Stewart died aged 89 in 2014 and it goes without saying that there have been many changes since she wrote Indian Fishing, but no attempt has been made to update either terminology or information, trusting that this classic work will be read and appreciated as a document of its time.
