Thanks to Mary Stokes at Christopher Moore's history blog (here), I've been alerted to Parks Canada's new on-line register of historic sites (here).
The website lists all the historic sites across the country along with a locator map and lots of information about each site. There are 1920 sites in BC, 116 in my community of North Vancouver alone.
To take just one example: the Central School on Chesterfield Avenue (pictured above), now home to the North Vancouver Museum, Presentation House Gallery and Presentation House Theatre, dates back to 1902 when the original portion of the building opened as North Vancouver School. In 1915 it became the "temporary" City Hall, a role it filled for the next sixty years!
Parks Canada launched its site last month. Take a peek. You are guaranteed to find out something interesting about your neighbourhood or community.
